Condition of Entry

Please note: By entering the award you declare that you have read, understood and agree to the terms and conditions.

These terms and conditions govern your participation in the Brisbane Portrait Prize (Competition).  The Competition is a portraiture competition run annually by The Queensland Portrait Prize Limited ACN 608 851 243 trading as Brisbane Portrait Prize (QPP).

You must comply with these terms and conditions and any additional instructions notified to you by QPP from time to time.  You may be disqualified from the Competition if you do not comply.

 

PRIZES

The prizes in the Competition are:

  • Brisbane Portrait Prize - Lord Mayor's Prize and overall winner - $50,000 (acquisitive)
  • The Courier-Mail People's Choice Award - $7,500 (non-acquisitive)
  • Accenture Digital Category - $10,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists - $5,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Performing Arts and Music Award - $7,500 (non-acquisitive)
  • Packers' Prize - $5,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Emerging Artists Award - 2 prizes, each a $1000 Exlades voucher (non-acquisitive)
  • Under 18 Artist Award - prize details to be announced (non-acquisitive)

 

The entry criteria and judging process for each prize are set out below.  Each prize will be awarded to the artwork meeting the applicable entry criteria for the prize and judged to be the best.

 

KEY DATES

Key dates for the Competition (Key Dates) will be published on the website at www.brisbaneportraitprize.org.  The Key Dates may change, so you should check the website regularly.

 

ELIGIBILITY

To enter the Competition, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Both you and the subject of your artwork (Subject) must have a connection with Brisbane.
  • Both you and the Subject must be Australian residents from the date entries open until the date finalists are notified as set out in the Key Dates.  An Australian resident is someone who holds a current permanent residency visa, or is an Australian citizen.
  • Except for the Under 18 Artist Award, you must be at least 18 years old.
  • The Subject must be alive at the time the artwork is created.

 

Additionally, to be eligible for the Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists, you must identify as a woman.  This prize is open to women of all diversities.

Directors, officers and employees of QPP are not eligible to enter the Competition.  QPP volunteers are eligible to enter.

 

THE ARTWORK

The artwork you enter in the Competition must meet the following entry criteria:

  • An original artwork, entirely completed and owned outright by you.
  • Two dimensional.
  • A portrait executed partly from life.  The Subject must have sat for you at least once. However, this requirement will not apply for the 2020 Competition.
  • You must have the Subject's consent to enter the artwork in the Competition, including ensuring they understand the artwork may be displayed to the public. 
  • Your artwork may be a self-portrait.
  • Completed within the 3 year period leading up to the closing date for entries set out in the Key Dates.
  • A maximum size of 2m high by 2m wide, including any frame.
  • A maximum weight of 15 kg.
  • May be multi-paneled, but must fit within the size restrictions above.
  • Wall-mountable, including by using D Rings and hanging wire.
  • An original work that does not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of another person.
  • Must not have won first prize in another major portraiture competition.

 

Additionally, for the Accenture Digital Category:

  • The artwork must be a digital artwork.
  • The artwork may be produced using photographic elements, manipulation of the image is welcomed, and this may be in the pre or post production of the image.
  • Selection weight will be given to those entries that display a clear artistic and creative approach to the Subject.
  • All digital mediums are eligible, but must be presented in a two dimensional printed form that can be hung in display. Videos and other forms of display requiring power cables are not eligible.

 

Additionally, for the Music and Performing Arts Award, the Subject must be a person who is, or has been, involved in the music and performing arts industries.

 

Additionally, for the Under 18 Artist Award, you must be inder the age of 18 years of age as at the closing date for entries. You must also ensure your parent or legal guardian reads these terms and conditions and agrees to them when you enter the Competition.

 

ENTRIES

You must adhere to the following entry criteria:

  • You may enter multiple artworks in the Competition.  Each artwork will be treated as a separate entry. A separate entry form and application fee must accompany each entry.
  • Entries must be submitted online only.
  • When you submit your entry, you must provide:
    • your details;
    • information about your artwork, including size and medium;
    • brief statements about the artwork, the Subject and you. Each statement may be up to 50 words, and must explain the connection that each of you and the Subject have with Brisbane; and
    • an image of the artwork in JPEG format (not exceeding 1 MB).
  • A non-refundable $50 entry fee (incl GST) per entry must be paid online using a credit card.  Entries will not be accepted until the entry fee has been received.
  • Entries must be received before 11.59pm AEST, on the closing date for entries set out in the Key Dates.

 

An entry may be rejected by QPP on reasonable grounds including because you do not comply with the eligibility or entry criteria or the artwork does not comply with the requirements in these terms and conditions, or because the artwork is otherwise determined not to be appropriate or suitable for the Competition.

 

SELECTION OF FINALISTS

  • QPP will appoint a panel (Judging Panel) consisting of a suitably qualified independent person and a number of members of the QPP Board to judge entries in the Competition.
  • The Judging Panel will select finalists using the image of the artwork provided with entry.
  • The number of finalists will be determined by QPP in consultation with the Judging Panel.
  • The Judging Panel's selection of finalists will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Finalists will be notified by the date set out in the Key Dates and the names of finalists will be released to the media shortly afterwards.
  • If you are a finalist, you agree to make yourself available for the purposes of exhibition related events, promotion and publicity at times and dates and in places reasonably requested by QPP.
  • For the Under 18 Artist Award, only the winner and highly commended will be displayed at the exhibition. Other finalists in this category will be displayed online only, and so the delivery, exhibition and collection terms and conditions below do not apply to those other finalists.

 

SELECTION FOR THE SALON DES REFUSES 

  • A Salon des Refusés will be operated by the Royal Queensland Arts Society (Brisbane Branch) Inc. (RQAS) in conjunction with QPP.
  • Your artwork may be selected for the Salon des Refusés if you are not a finalist and you indicated you wanted your artwork to be considered for the Salon des Refusés when you entered the Competition.
  • RQAS will be responsible for selecting artworks for the Salon des Refusés, including appointing one or more persons to judge and select the artworks.  RQAS's section of artworks for the Salon des Refusés will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

 

PREPARING FOR DELIVERY

If you are a finalist or your artwork is selected for the Salon des Refusés, you must adhere to the following requirements when preparing your artwork for delivery:

  • Your artwork must be ready for hanging including use of ‘D’ rings and hanging wire.  No artworks will be pinned to walls.
  • Wet paintings will not be accepted.
  • Your artwork must be clearly labeled on the back with your name and contact details.
  • Multi-paneled artworks must include a picture of the assembled work with clear instructions for installation.
  • If a person other than you, including a courier, will be delivering your artwork you must attach a copy of the confirmation email sent to you at the time of entering the Competition to the back of your artwork.

 

DELIVERY OF WORK

If you are a finalist or your artwork is selected for the Salon des Refusés, you must adhere to the following requirements for delivering your artwork:

  • If you are a finalist, your artwork must be delivered at your expense to the delivery dock at Brisbane Powerhouse, 119 Lamington St, New Farm QLD 4005.
  • If your artwork is selected for the Salon des Refusés, your artwork must be delivered at your expense to Petrie Terrace Gallery, Unit 3, 162 Petrie Terrace, Brisbane QLD 4000.
  • You will be advised of the dates and times for delivery.
  • If you are a finalist and your artwork is not delivered within the time allowed, it will not be considered for the second round of judging.
  • Your artwork may be delivered in person by you or another person authorised by you, including a courier.  In all cases, you are responsible for any risk of loss or damage to the artwork while it is in transit.  Artwork cannot be delivered by post.

 

EXHIBITION

  • Finalists' artwork will be exhibited at Brisbane Powerhouse, and artworks selected for the Salon des Refusés will be exhibited at Petrie Terrace Gallery, during the exhibition period set out in the Key Dates.
  • Your artwork must remain in the exhibition and cannot be removed until the end of the exhibition.
  • Artworks in the exhibitions will not be available for purchase.
  • You acknowledge that:
    • the exhibition venues are air-conditioned, but not climate controlled;
    • the exhibition venues are open to the public;
    • it will be impractical to prevent the public from taking photographs of your artwork; and
    • you will not hold QPP or RQAS responsible for such photography.

 

SELECTION OF PRIZE WINNERS

  • Only finalists' artworks are eligible to be selected for a prize.
  • The winner of each prize (except the People's Choice Prize and Packers' Prize, Emerging Artists Award and Under 18 Artist Award) will be selected by a suitably qualified independent person (Chief Judge) appointed by QPP.  The Chief Judge will not be a person on the Judging Panel.
  • The criteria and method used by the Chief Judge to select winning artworks will be determined by the Chief Judge.
  • The winner of the People's Choice Prize will be selected by members of the public using the criteria and method determined by QPP.
  • The winner of the Packers' Prize will be selected by QPP volunteers who receive, unpack and hang the artworks using the criteria and method determined by QPP.
  • The winners of the Emerging Artists Awards and Under 18 Artist Award will be selected by the QPP Board.  The QPP Board may have input from a local art specialist (e.g. academic or curator) in selecting the winner of the Under 18 Artist Award.
  • The selection of prize winning artworks will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • An artwork may be selected for more than 1 prize.

 

AWARDING OF PRIZES

  • Prize winners will be announced on the opening night and awards presentation during the finalists' exhibition and published on the Brisbane Portrait Prize website shortly afterwards.
  • Except for the Emerging Artists Prize, prizes will be paid to the prize winners by the method determined by QPP.
  • Each voucher for the Emerging Artists Awards will be a voucher issued by Oxlades Art Supplies.  Separate terms and conditions will apply to use of the voucher, including any terms and conditions printed or referred to on the voucher.  QPP reserves the right to substitute the voucher for a prize of similar value at its discretion.

 

COLLECTION OF ARTWORK

  • If you are a finalist or your artwork is selected for the Salon des Refusés, your artwork must be collected from the exhibition venue after the exhibition has concluded but no later than the last day for collection set out in the Key Dates.
  • Your artwork may be collected in person by you or by another person authorised by you, including a courier.  You must notify QPP or RQAS (as applicable) if a person other than you will be collecting your artwork.  In all cases, you are responsible for any risk of loss or damage to the artwork while it is in transit.
  • QPP and RQAS will not be responsible for returning your artwork or paying any costs associated with it being returned to you.
  • If your artwork is not collected by the last day for collection set out in the Key Dates, it will be held in storage for one month.  You agree to reimburse QPP for any reasonable storage costs.  If your artwork is still not collected after one month, QPP reserves the right to sell or dispose of your artwork and retain any proceeds of sale.
  • This provision does not apply if you win the Lord Mayor's Prize.

 

USE OF ARTWORK

  • You warrant that, for any artwork you enter in the Competition:
    • you are the owner of the artwork and the copyright in the artwork;
    • the artwork is your own original work; and
    • use of the artwork in relation to the Competition in accordance with these terms and conditions will not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of another person.
  • If you are a finalist or your artwork is selected for the Salon des Refusés, you grant QPP a non-exclusive, sub-licensable, worldwide, perpetual and irrevocable license to exercise copyright in your artwork for the purposes of administering, promoting and providing information about the Competition.  This includes producing photographs, catalogues and advertising for promotional purposes.
  • You retain all moral rights in your artwork.

 

OWNERSHIP

  • If you win the Lord Mayor's Prize, your artwork will become the property of the Brisbane City Council.  This does not affect copyright or moral rights in the artwork.
  • If you do not win the Lord Mayer's Prize, your artwork will remain your property.

 

LIABILITY

  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, none of QPP, RQAS, any of their directors, sponsors, employees, agents, officers, contractors and volunteers, the Chief Judge, or any member of the Judging Panel (together the Indemnified) will be liable for any loss or damage to your artwork while it is in their care, custody or control.
  • If you are concerned about your artwork being lost or damaged, you should take out your own insurance coverage.
  • You indemnify the Indemnified against any loss or damage suffered or incurred by the Indemnified arising from any claim by a third party in relation to your artwork, including any claim that your artwork infringes another person's copyright or moral rights.

 

CHANGES

We may make reasonable changes to the manner in which the Competition is conducted.  We will endeavor to keep you informed of any material changes.  We may also postpone or cancel the Competition if circumstances outside our control materially prevent us from conducting the Competition in the manner set out in these terms and conditions.  If the Competition is cancelled, we will refund your entry fee.

 

GOVERNING LAW

These terms and conditions will be governed by the laws of Queensland.
