Condition of Entry

Please note: By entering the award you declare that you have read, understood and agree to the terms and conditions.

These rules govern your (artist's) entry and involvement in the Brisbane Portrait Prize (the Prize), a portraiture competition run annually by the QPP Board1 (the Board).


The prize will be awarded to the best portrait produced by an artist with a connection to Brisbane and of a subject with a connection to Brisbane.


There will be five awards in the Brisbane Portrait Prize. They are:

 

  • Brisbane Portrait Prize - Lord Mayor's Prize and overall winner - $50,000 (Acquisitive)

  • The Courier-Mail People's Choice Award - $7,500 (non acquisitive);

  • Accenture Digital Category - $10,000 (non acquisitive);

  • Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists - $5,000 (non acquisitive); and

  • Music and Performing Arts Award (Supported by the Harvey Lister Family Foundation) - $7,500 (non acquisitive).

 

To be considered for selection, an artist must comply with all entry instructions, rules and conditions. The instructions, rules and conditions are set out below, and as published from time to time by the Board. The Board reserves the right to disqualify any work from the Prize if the artist has not adhered to these rules. Also, in relation to any decision, discretion or opinion pursuant to the rule, the Board has final and ultimate say.

KEY DATES

  • Entries open – January 2019

  • Entries close – 23 August 2019

  • Finalists advised - 13 September 2019

  • Artwork delivery - 27 September 2019

  • Exhibition – 30 September – 31 October 2019

 

 

ELIGIBILITY

For all categories:

  • The artist and subject must be Australian residents for the period set out in the Key dates see above (An ‘Australian resident’ is someone who holds a current permanent residency visa, or is an Australian citizen.)

  • The artist must be 18 years old or older.

  • The artist and subject must have a connection with Brisbane. This connection must be outlined in the artists 50 word statement, which must be submitted with the artwork.

  • All subjects with a connection to Brisbane are welcome and admissible, including self-portraits. The Brisbane Portrait Prize does encourage artists to consider producing portraits of people who have contributed to Brisbane.

  • Directors, Officers and Employees of the Board are not eligible to enter (however volunteers are still eligible to enter).

  • All subjects must be alive at the time the artwork is produced.

 

THE ARTWORK

All artworks must be:

  • An original artwork, entirely completed and owned outright by the submitting artist.

  • 2 dimensional.

  • A portrait executed partly from life. The subject must have sat for the artist at least once. By entering the Prize you confirm that the subject has sat for you and you have their consent to enter the Prize, including ensuring they understand the artwork will be on public display, should it be selected as a finalist.

  • Completed within the 3 year period leading up to the Prize last entry date set out in the Key Dates.

  • A maximum size of 2m high by 2m wide, including the frame.

  • A maximum weight of 20Kg.

  • May be multi-paneled, but must fit within the size restrictions.

  • Wall-mountable, including use of D Rings and hanging wire.

  • Original and not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party.

Additionally, for Digital artworks:

  • The submitted portrait may be produced using photographic elements, manipulation of the image is welcomed, and this may be in the pre or post production of the image.

  • Selection weight will be given to those entries that display a clear artistic and creative approach to the subject.

  • All digital mediums are eligible, but must be presented in a 2D printed form that can be hung in display. No video, or monitors requiring power cables are eligible.  See FAQs for more details.

Additionally for the Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists:

  • The artist must be a woman. Note that this prize is open to women of all diversities.

Additionally, for the Music and Performing Arts Award:

  • The subject must be a person who is, or has been, involved in the music and performing arts industries.

 

All entries are eligible for the Courier-Mail People’s Choice Award and the Brisbane Portrait Prize (Lord Mayor’s Prize)

 

All entries, whether entered in one of the specific categories or not, are eligible for the Courier-Mail People’s Choice Award and the Brisbane Portrait Prize (Lord Mayor’s Prize)

 

ENTRIES

All entries must adhere to the following entry criteria:

  • There is no limit to the number of entries an artist may submit, however, a separate entry form and application fee must accompany each entry.

  • Entries must be submitted via online entry only.

  • Entrants will be asked for

    • the artist’s details,

    • artwork details,

    • a 50 word statement about the artist

    • a 50 word statement about the artwork and subject

    • a JPEG image for each artwork (should not exceed 1MB).

  • A non-refundable $50 entry fee (incl GST) per entry must also be paid online using a credit card.  Entries will not be accepted until entry fee has been received.

  • Entries must be received before 12pm (Brisbane time), on the closing date set out in Key Dates.

 

An entry may be rejected by the Board on any reasonable grounds including because the artist does not comply with the eligibility criteria or the artwork does not comply with the entry criteria, or because the artwork is otherwise determined not to be appropriate or suitable for the competition.

 

SELECTION OF FINALISTS

  • Finalists will be selected from the jpeg image of the artwork provided with entry.
  • The finalists will be selected by a subcommittee of the Board, and external Judge.  The members and number of members on the judging panel will be selected solely by the Board.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The finalists will be notified by the date set out in the Key Dates and the list of finalists will be released to the media on the date set out in the Key Dates.
  • Finalists will be required to deliver their artwork for exhibition according to the procedure set out below.  Artworks that are not delivered by the final date for delivery will not be accepted for the second round of judging. 
  • All artworks will remain in the exhibition and cannot be removed until the first day of the collection period. 

 

SELECTION OF PRIZE WINNERS

  • The prize winners will be selected by a subcommittee of the Board and external Judge. The members and number of members on the judging panel will be selected solely by the Board.
  • The judges’ decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The winner of the People's Choice Prize will be selected by members of the public.
  • Prize winners will be announced on the dates set out in Key Dates and published on the Brisbane Portrait Prize website.

 

PREPARING FOR DELIVERY

All finalists must adhere to these rules when preparing their artwork for delivery:

  • Entries must be ready for hanging including use of ‘D’ rings and hanging wire. No artworks will be pinned to walls.
  • Wet paintings will not be accepted.
  • Entries must be clearly labeled on the back with artist’s name and contact details.
  • Multi paneled artworks must include a picture of assembled work with clear instructions for installation.
  • If using a courier, a copy of the confirmation email must be attached in an envelope to the back of the artwork. 

 

DELIVERY OF ARTWORK

All finalists must adhere to the requirements for delivery.  Failure to do so will render the artists entry into the final judging stage invalid.

  • Entries must be delivered at the artist’s expense between 10am and 5pm (Brisbane time) to the Delivery Dock of the Brisbane Powerhouse, 119 Lamington St, New Farm QLD 4005 by no later than the date set out in the Key Dates.
  • If delivery is unable to be made in person, the entrant is to nominate a representative (such as a courier or friend).
  • Each entrant is responsible for maintaining their own insurance over the artwork during the exhibition and transit.
  • Reasonable care will be taken in handling the artwork, however the Prize is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to any artworks during the duration of the finalists’ exhibition or during transit to and from the exhibition.
  • Entrants should note the venue is air-conditioned, but not climate controlled. It is also open to the public.

 

EXHIBITING THE ARTWORK

The artist grants the Prize permission to display the artwork in an exhibition of selected finalists for the Prize at the Brisbane Powerhouse or such other venue as the Board may in its absolute discretion determine, and at any reasonable time following the finalists exhibition.

 

Selected artists agree to make themselves available for the purposes of exhibition related events, promotion and publicity at times and dates and in places reasonably requested by the Board. 

 

LICENSING OF ARTWORK

  • The artist warrants that:
    • it is the owner of the artwork and the copyright in the artwork, the artwork is original and use of the artwork in relation to the Prize in accordance with these terms will not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party; and
    • it has all the necessary rights, consents and authorisations required to license the artwork in accordance with this provision.
  • All finalists grant the Prize a non-exclusive, sub-licensable, worldwide, perpetual and irrevocable licence to exercise the copyright in the artwork for the purposes of administering, promoting and providing information about the Prize. This includes but is not limited to producing photographs, catalogues and advertising for promotional purposes. 
  • The Prize acknowledges that the artist retains all moral rights in the artwork.
  • The artist also acknowledges that if their artwork is included in the exhibition:
    • it will be impractical for the Prize to prevent visitors from taking photographs of the artwork; and
    • the artist will not hold the Prize liable for such photography. 

 

PRIZES

  • The winner of the Brisbane Portrait Prize (Lord Mayor’s Prize) will receive a cash prize of $50,000.

  • The winner of the Courier-Mail People’s Choice Award will receive a cash prize of $7,500.

  • The winner of the Accenture Digital Award will receive a cash prize of $10,000.

  • The winner of the Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists will receive a cash prize of $5,000.

  • ​The winner of the Music and Performing Arts Award will receive a cash prize of $7,500.

  • The winners will be announced on the date set out in the Key Dates.

  • Finalists and the prize winners will be announced on the date set out in the Key Dates.

  • Winning artists will be asked to provide additional information and agree to make themselves available for the purposes of exhibition related events, promotion and publicity at times and dates and in places reasonably requested by the Prize.

 

COLLECTION OF ARTWORK

  • At the conclusion of the finalists’ exhibition, all artworks must be collected from Brisbane Powerhouse loading Dock: 119 Lamington St, New Farm QLD 4005.  The period for collection is for the period set out in the Key Dates.
  • The artist is responsible for organising collection of the artwork.  If the artist nominates a representative or courier to collect the artwork, the Prize is to be notified. The original entry form that was handed in with the artwork is to state the nominated collector.
  • The Prize will NOT pay for any costs incurred in the collection of any entry.
  • There will be NO returns via Australia Post.
  • If the artworks are not collected during the specified collection time, the artwork will be held for one month. After this the Prize reserves the right to sell or dispose of the artwork.
  • This provision does not apply to the artwork that wins the Lord Mayor’s Prize.

 

INDEMNITY

To the maximum extent permitted by law, neither the QPP (including its directors, sponsors, employees, agents, officers and contractors) nor any member of the judging panel (together the Indemnified), will be liable for any loss or damage to any artwork while it is in their care, custody or control.  Any artist concerned about any loss or damage should take out their own insurance coverage.  By entering the Prize the artist accepts these instructions, rules and conditions and indemnifies the Indemnified against any damage or loss in relation to their artwork or arising from any claim against the Indemnified that the artwork infringes another person's rights, including copyright or moral rights.

 

OWNERSHIP

The artist agrees by entering the Prize that the winning artwork of the Lord Mayor’s Prize will become the property of the City of Brisbane City Collection.  This does not affect the copyright in the artwork.  All other artwork remains the property of the artist.

 

GOVERNING LAW

These instructions, rules, conditions and indemnities shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Queensland.
