DESCRIPTION

About the Artist

Born in 1970, Narrogin Western Australia.
Lori spent her early childhood on her family's farm at Yilliminning in the wheatbelt of Western Australia, and her
early adult life jillarooing on the cattle station of her husband’s family, Wyloo, in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
She now farms with her husband on their sustainable agricultural farming property in the south west of Western
Australia, Boyup Brook, where her studio is located.
Lori is a nationally recognised artist, having been shortlisted for prestigious awards such as the Portia Geach
Memorial Award and the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture. In 2021, she won the $50,000 Kilgour Art Prize at
Newcastle Art Gallery. Lori has held 27 solo exhibitions, hung in more than 50 group shows and shortlisted for
over 70 awards.
“My art practice is an exploration of myself, my identity and placement within my family’s multifaceted history. It
is illustrated directly from my responses to, and relationship with our landscape. Our family have had unbroken
tenure with the Australian landscape since first settlement and it is this long generational connection and lived
experiences in this environment that I draw from. I combine both the European and indigenous lineages of my
family heritage to express ideas about identity and belonging, while exploring the complex history which is
embedded in the remote region where I live.
The botanical elements in my work are used as a reflection of personal transformations. I link key positive
personality traits of people with those found in the local flora as a way of expressing inner strengths. From them
I have developed a distinctive language of flowers that has become a personal signature of my practice. The
birds in my work either express aspects of myself or allegorise women in my family, past and present who have
influenced my shaping.
My painting practice portrays my own personal journey and I hope to link people to narratives that reawaken
their own life stories and transformations.”
